Young Executive of the Year, 2008

The AFR BOSS Young Executive of the Year Awards are run in association with DDI consultants. The awards recognise the achievements of our aspiring future senior leaders, by identifying six young Australians with the skills, talent and drive needed to make a successful leader. The winners have been announced in the July 2008 issue of AFR BOSS.

SALLY MACDONALD

Sally Macdonald has been CEO of OrotonGroup since September 2006. OrotonGroup is a publicly listed retailer that owns the Oroton accessories brand as well as the Polo Ralph Lauren license in Australia and NZ. Sally's previous experience includes general management, buying and store operations, at Banana Republic (a division of The Gap Inc) in San Francisco; and business development and management consulting with the Boston Consulting Group in Melbourne and New York, focused on global consumer branded clients in industries such as cosmetics, personal care and music. Sally holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a Bachelor of Commerce from Melbourne University.

 

 

ROGER CORBETT AM

Roger Corbett was appointed CEO of Woolworths Limited in 1999 and retired from the position in 2006 but continues to work with the company in a consulting capacity. In June 2003 he was awarded an AM for "service to the retail industry, particularly as a contributor to the development of industry policy and standards, and to the community." Roger has a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of NSW and completed the Stanford University California Management Course. He is a member of the board of the Reserve Bank of Australia and is a director on a number of boards, including Wal-Mart and Fairfax Media, holds several other executive positions and is a member of The Prime Minister's Community Business Partnership. He also sits on the advisory committee at AGSM.

 

BONITA BOEZEMAN AO

Bonnie Boezeman is a former managing director and chairman of Time Life, current chairman of PayPal Australia Pty Ltd and deputy chair of the NSW State Lottery. She sits on the board of the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority, is chairman of the Catholic Development Fund Advisory Board and holds several other board positions. She was the executive producer of the official XXVIII World Youth Day song for Pope Benedict XVI's visit this year, is chairman of the East West Foundation and sits on the Sydney Swans Women's Advisory Board. She has been a judge on BOSS Magazine's Young Executives of the Year awards since 2004.

DR BRUCE WATT

Dr Bruce Watt is the managing director of Development Dimensions International (DDI) in Australia. DDI conducts the assessments of the Young Executive of the Year Awards finalists. Before joining the company he lectured at Macquarie Graduate School of Management and the University of Technology Sydney, and was a senior consultant at Morgan & Banks.

It's strange, this mood of shifting realities we're dealing with. The pain of rising prices and interest rates and the shock at the petrol pump swirls through the media. And after a decade of low inflation, the impact on business inputs, supply chains and consumer behaviour is thudding home even as the resources sector struggles with meeting soaring demand. It comes as decision-making horizons are shrinking sharply and the strategists are busy revising scenarios. Scientific research suggests we are often ill-prepared, unable to countenance change, especially after long periods of prosperity. The psychologists even have a name for the phenomenon - deferred salience, a state in which people forget or have no experience of dealing with adversity and are ill equipped emotionally and pragmatically to respond to a challenging, ambiguous environment.
